Martha's affirmation that she does indeed believe, "Yes, Lord. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Jesus assures Martha that her brother will rise again and states: "I am the resurrection and the life. Before they enter the town, Martha, Lazarus' sister, comes to meet Jesus and tells him: "if you had been here, my brother would not have died". When they arrive in Bethany, Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days. The disciples are afraid of returning to Judea, but Jesus says: "Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him." when the apostles misunderstand, he clarifies, "Lazarus is dead, and for your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe." Jesus then delays his departure for two days. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." Jesus tells his followers: "This sickness will not end in death. Bible Story of Lazarus Raised from the DeadĪccording to John, Jesus receives a message that Lazarus is ill, and his two sisters seek his help. Martha, Mary’s sister, complained to Jesus that her sister needed to help her in the kitchen ( Luke 10:38-42). His sister, Mary, would sit at the Master’s feet and listen to his words. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, ( R) and told them to give her something to eat.Jesus had previously visited the three siblings and had enjoyed the family’s hospitality. ( J) Go in peace ( K) and be freed from your suffering.”ģ5 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”ģ1 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”ģ2 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. ( H)ģ0 At once Jesus realized that power ( I) had gone out from him. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, ( G) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding ( F) for twelve years. Please come and put your hands on ( E) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.Ī large crowd followed and pressed around him. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying.
